I suppose what I really want from a chat/community is to very selfishly round up all MY favourite people and talk about all MY favourite things on MY preferred platform and with MY rules.
That doesnāt sound like a positive thing for everyone else though.
*sigh*
I love you all, people!!! š
Follow upā¦
I remembered that, thanks to two awesome people who may see this, I am in two brilliant chat groups. (Hopefully you know who you are and I'm very grateful šš).
But I find myself wanting something bigger, with channels/separate topics, and more diverse in terms of tech and location.
Trying out @changelogās Slack to see how that goes.
I re-posted earlier about isitchristmas.com having chat in the console.
This is a good write up: https://konklone.com/post/how-to-hack-the-developer-console-to-be-needlessly-interactive
But I want to know how the back-end of this works. Presumably just a light-weight process for connecting people together in "roomsā.
Some useful bash aliasesā¦
If nothing else, this will inspire me to create more of my own!
I also (in addition to dev mid-life crisis podcast) really want, like, some chat or telegram or Discord group that's polite, friendly, supportive, no-shitposting, dad- (and mom-) jokes allowed/encouraged, creative, fun, geeky-but-tech-agnostic, worldly-wise.
Curmudgeonly-grumping allowed. But where even I get told off if it gets personal or unwelcoming.
I kinda have this, but it never quite works out as I'd hoped. I think my standards are too high.
I'm starting to wonder why my podcast feed isn't now full of podcasts about surviving the mid-life developer crisis. With topics like:
– What am I going to do for the next 15 years before I retire?
– How do I work with all these young people who know more than me (but lack the wisdom of years)
– How do I stop feeling bad that I have no spare time for hacking/side-projects/gaming because I have kids who need to be taken to their swimming class and stuff.
Seriously?
And no, I wonāt.
Little things like this are the death-by-a-thousand-paper-cuts stuff that makes the #WordPress block editor so frustrating.
I can't click āH3" because the tooltip for āH2ā is covering it.
This UI is FIVE years old now.
And it still winds me up almost every time I use it.
Yes! At last! The firehose of brands emailing me a happy Christmas has been turned off!! The silence in my inbox is, frankly, deafening. Can it be like this all the time?
(I knowā¦unsubscribe)
First time queuing to charge the EV! Was at services at lunchtime yesterday on the big Christmas travel day. So unusual.
Nice self-organisation by everyone (apart from the posh Jag/Porsche owners – entitled guys who just drove right in to the broken charger bay! š)
But an interesting thing to experience. And a thing that I guess will become more and more common. š¤
Here thenā¦
A static āheadlessā āappā (yes, in quote marks) that presents a mobile-app like version of my blog.
It needs some polish, some navigation/state/history and pages need to work. But it's good enough to show.
I wanted to do this to show that:
– It can be done with low effort levels
– and with little JavaScript (<3KB + Alpine.js = 20KB total)
– and be FAST and FREE!
Wanted to get this done before the Christmas break. Will write up in the coming days!
I wrote some tests for an important API today. Found about three bugs that hadnāt been spotted before.
Write tests! Itās a slog sometimes, but even just the process of writing them can reveal things about your code that arenāt right.
Well, that's that. Thanks Redact!
There's about 160 posts that I don't seem to be able to delete. Some weird thing with retweets that I can't undo.
I'll keep a couple of accounts. There are some things on there I need to follow that aren't really anywhere else. But the app is deleted (a long time ago). The pinned tab is closed. And now the content is gone too.
Good times. Will be remembered fondly. And then it went to shit.
āļø There's a lot going on right now and I've been having a lot of thoughts about what is going on. In some cases I think I've expressed these thoughts well. In other cases, other people have expressed things that have helped me.
Here are some quotes and thoughts…
Digging into the WordPress interactivity API this week.
Hang onā¦ did we stop using PHP to generate HTML on our sites? When did this happen?
I mean, itās all good. Apart from the fact that we are rolling out own thing with Preact. I love me some JavaScript sprinkles.
Iām just baffled as to why it needs to be justified with āWe need to do SSR in PHPā like thatās something we forgot we could do?
The following re-posts are because I, too, have noticed the proliferation of annual wrap upsā¦
Iām only just now realising that there is a cohort of web developers that simply donāt think about sending HTML over HTTP. The suggestion of such a thing must be alien and surprising to them because itās not really in their vocabulary.
How can we nurture relationships between use-web-standards-first folks and use-the-JA-from-JAMstack-first folks?
Itās SO DARK. Did they change the clocks again? Did the sun forget to rise?
Today I realised that not only do Vercel make NextJS, but they are a main sponsor of Astro and, through employing Rich Harris, basically own Svelte as well.
What the heck?
Why?
And which will die first?
Oh yay! I found an actual post on Facebook?
Itās not an ad!
Oh wait.
No.
Itās some misinformation about how it takes ā100KG of RAM chipsā to make an EV battery.
Lol š
