Not made a sourdough for a while. Was worried about my starter. But…
I think it’ll be OK!! 😎

Yay! I did bike riding!! Nothing big but it’s the first time in a long time so I’m happy.
But also…
Boo!!!
That main arterial cycle route they were improving is still a complete fucking mess. 😡
This is not helped by the fact that, as well as Christmas, our lives contain four birthdays of close family and three birthdays of close friends.
Aaargh!!
(I’m not saying birthdays are bad or shouldn’t be celebrated. It’s just a lot all at once!)
Saying this in case anyone else feels it and thinks it’s just them:
I hate December.
There is SO much expectation put on you either by others or by yourself (!) about what you should do and how you should be happy and excited by it all.
I’m exhausted after the long few months since summer where my northern-hemisphere world gets dark. I need a holiday. But my todo list just explodes.
I don’t use the word hate much. It’s a strong word. But I hate December.
And if you do too, you’re not alone.

@imdavidpierce on The Vergecast confessing that he upgraded instead of closing some browser tabs.
Had some mostly-analogue fun today too. The new “Paper Apps” game got delivered. I get PDFs because shipping is so expensive.

I combined it with the Zine Maker tool that I found recently which made printing it in a foldable form really easy.

And it’s really fun to play!!
This is a very interesting little
card game. Amazing what has been achieved with Pico-8! (It’s multi-cart, if you’re interested)
Definitely has a lot of potential. Possibly it’s a little too complicated / learning curve too steep. Not sure. Have you tried it?

My mid-life crisis is morphing into one about retro gaming.
This is bad.
This is a good summary of PHP 8.4, out this week!
My little tool summarises changes and helps you find what version they were first/last in:

So, like, tell me about AliExpress.
Is it all just super dodgy? Or are these the same things I can buy on Amazon for about 10x the cost?
I know there are dropshippers and people branding generic stuff with huge markup. Is it ever safe to just go buy the generic?
Saw the movie “CODA" last night. What a beautiful story and piece of film. The only disappointing thing for me was the highly-predictable ending. I mean, nicely done. But highly-predictable!
I shall now shut up about my precious thing for the day.
It has caused me lots of thoughts about product positioning, features, design, and pricing.
I hope some of them were interesting.
With the release of CommandUI there has suddenly been a lot of people looking deeply at how my own product Turbo Admin works, and comparing the two tools.
This post addresses some of the philosophy behind Turbo Admin, and clarifies some things about the tool that aren’t necessarily obvious.
https://rosswintle.uk/2024/11/turbo-admin-philosophy-and-workings/
I realised that if Turbo Admin is “finished” software that you buy, and if it’s less than 1.44MB, I could sell it on a floppy disk! 🤣
It’s is both of those things!!
And now I’m remembering “patch disks”. That was a thing, right? A program that patched a disk that had another program on it.
That always felt very risky. But that’s how we got updates!!
I also find it interesting that people call Turbo Admin’s pricing a “Lifetime Deal”.
It’s not.
It’s the old-school idea of “buying a thing”.
Literally: Here’s a thing I made. You can buy it. It costs X.
I might support it (I’ve done a ton of support the last week).
I might add to it. (I will! But that’s not why you should buy it.)
But when you buy it you should consider it “Finished”.
Weird, huh?
It's very interesting seeing the Turbo Admin vs CommandUI comparisons. No one was ever this interested in my product before!
About to write a post about some of the decisions I made along the way and the constraints that Turbo Admin has.
There may also be some kind of “Philosophy" page on the Turbo Admin site. Though I want a better word than that.
@szepeviktor Hey Viktor. I see you joined and followed. Welcome!
Ah yes. The Passport Photos thing. It's still good!!
An actual conversation I was proud of…
My son saw me using Notes on my Mac last night.
“How did you do that?”
“What? Make the text bold? Look. Cmd-B!”
“Oh. Cool!”
“Cmd-B. Bold! Cmd-B. Unbold! Cmd-I. Italic! Cmd-U. Underline!”
“What’s Cmd-O?”
“Ah, that’s when you’re not wearing underpants!”
🤪🤣😎
The Vergecast delivers again! 😂
@reckless1280 makes everyone laugh by revealing how he's using iMessage's “send later" function.
"My feeling is like if there's a little delay in the response, it makes is do that we are not about to have a conversation… I write ‘Sorry I didn't see this' immediately and then schedule it for three days from now… I have an INFINITE amount of incoming where I just need to deliver an answer and not have a 25 minute conversation”.
