I will add that yes, I know about Laravel Shift. But I wanted to do this manually to get a feel for the process.

– Knowledge from Marcel Pociot Package Development course was super helpful! https://phppackagedevelopment.com/
– One of the apps had tests – I felt so much more confident upgrading that!
– Upgrading can be hard – you need to know PHP and Composer well to understand messages and debug

Yesterday I did one side-project app upgrade from Laravel 5.1 to 6.0 and one from 5.7 to 5.8 and then 6.0.
Really simple apps, I should add.
Notes:
– New ignition errors weren’t always helpful and took some getting used to.
– Had to fork the ReCaptcha package I use

I’m sitting in bed with half a voice and feeling rubbish. But I want to do some thanking and promoting while I’m here.
Firstly, Laravel 6 was out this week. So huge thanks to Taylor, Mohammed and everyone that makes this awesome free thing that I get to use. 🙌

Finally, on headphones. When I got my not-true-wireless earbuds about two years ago for £30 I was like “Woah, you can get tech like that that isn’t terrible for £30‽‽”
I’m now doing the same with true-wireless. It’s VERY impressive.

I’ve yet to cycle with them but they seem comfy, light and stay in my ears (which I didn’t expect). They’re a bit big and stupid-looking but 🤷♂️. Sound quality is fine for podcasts and a bit of music, audiophiles will protest. Not tried a call yet. Mic probably awful.

Having lost my wireless earbuds while cycling, I thought I’d try “true wireless”. Apple’s things never stay in my ears and I was on a budget. I picked up these for £30 and they do the job just fine.

Someone shared this sweet, joyful, innocent, beautiful, fun little father-and-daughter video years ago. It makes frequent appearances in our house. Maybe it’ll make a nice break from politics and tech: https://youtu.be/Bpu0TIXzI1w

And thank you to the orange BMW driver who did an exemplary, full-road-width cyclist-overtake and then indicated (they DO dirt them!! 😉) perfectly at the roundabout, also on Northern Road this afternoon!
Happy cyclist tonight. 🙌😃👍

I sometimes criticise bad driving I see while cycling but I try to celebrate good too. So…
Thanks to the lady in the black 4WD this morning who was a model of safe, gracious driving as she followed me down Northern Road

Yay! #Weeknotes for this week are done.
Includes a Laravel tip, a “lifehack” that amounts to “writing things down” (🤷♂️), an annoying Google Maps setting that cyclists should turn off, and camping equipment reviews!

Gosh the drama in tech communities is draining. I get energy from trying to help and from being helped. And this is happening ALL the time. Let’s shout about it.
Tech communities are GOOD!

Huh – WordPress is changing how it blocks robots. Seems I didn’t understand this as well as I thought I did:

Where’s the best place to get a money card pre-loaded with dollars?
And would doing so be somehow unethical?
Asking for a friend, etc.

I guess all the politicians will agree that a 6-week general election is better than closing down parliament, will they?

Yesterday I made by first ACF/WordPress Gutenberg Block with. An interesting experience. Starting to see the benefit of component-scoped styles. Not sure how you’re supposed to do this in ACF-block world.

We got QR codes the wrong way around to start with. We thought the companies should have the codes and the people should have the scanners. But it works better the other way around!
