Content warning:Short review of Project Hail Mary movie – attempting no spoilers but warning you anyway.

Project Hail Mary is a great movie. Takes itself less seriously than The Martian did. Surprisingly faithful to the book! They do the end very fast, and there are places where complicated things have been simplified of skimmed over. But they just about cover everything. Which is impressive!

My wife knows nothing of the book and enjoyed it too.

Off to see Project Hail Mary in IMAX tonight. Not been this excited for a movie in a long time! 😃

I’m reminded today of “Literally, all I do…” from a few years back. And this post seems somehow very relevant to today.

I can’t remember which newsletter it was in but my whole family are now simultaneously playing this stupid thing and it’s simple and joyous!

Watched an interview with Ryan Gosling about Project Hail Mary where he mentions The Abyss as a good sci-fi film. Not seen that for years. Where can I watch it?

OK. I am not a mad crazy sportsball man. I like to watch about 7 or 8 Six Nations rugby matches in a year.

Now… my kids get to watch vast amounts of whatever TV they like every day (it’s fine, we limit screen time!). But I want to watch two hours of rugby match in peace (or with other interested parties) and I swear it’s just impossible.

So bloody annoying. 🤬

Anyway. Epic and brutal match tonight. Huge congrats to France.

I don’t think the Irish have ever cheered for England like they must be doing now, right?

This is what I mean when I say my.wordpress.net is overkill. You can make awesome little PWA’s like these! 👏👏👏

I was sad to learn that Playground uses a service worker to intercept requests and send them to PHP-on-WASM. I thought it used some WASM version of Express, and I wanted to coin the term "The SPEW Stack”. For SQLite, PHP, Express, WASM.

😆

The new WordPress in your browser thing is neat. Playground is a really innovative project.

But it’s being touted for personal apps. Which I think is bonkers.

It’s 137MB clean download, and you have to run PHP, a database and a web server in your browser.

Just write some JavaScript.

Vite 8 is out.

We shouldn’t have to celebrate this or point it out, but the lack of AI here is notable. Nothing in the announcement posts and I can’t see any trace of it in the repo (with a cursory glance)

I always liked the Vue/Vite team.

Benefit of “Big Phone”: playing games with a Playtile is way better!

https://get.playtil.es/

I tried hard to make it last. But my iPhone 13 Mini was finally despairing at me and the 17e was too good value.

I’m now a “Big Phone” person.

Seriously, how do y’all cope lugging these huge bricks around all day? 😆

I miss 5.4” already.

For those interested, I added a brief update to this to say what my position with using AI/LLM coding tools on Turbo Admin is.

Short version: I've used some "fancy autocomplete" on it, but that is all I've done and all I plan to do. This is not and will not be vibe coded or agent-assissted.

After a short pause while things were busy, I'll finally have time to put into developing Turbo Admin again. Hooray!

(Turbo Admin, if you don't know, is my magical WordPress browser extension that adds a command palette and other customisations to ALL your WP sites)

ClawCon sounds so very Web 3.0/NFC doesn’t it?

They don't make technology like they used to.

I just found an old hand-held Garmin GPS device. It's at least 18 years old.

Takes 2 AA batteries, so no problem powering it. But it was stuck showing the wrong date and time from 2006, and no way to update that.

Garmin released an update for this device at some point that fixes this.

Their updater software from 2019 still works.

I found a mini-USB cable.

All updated and working fine!

Amazing. (And kudos to Garmin for the update)

This guy was a legend. So positive and generous. Still can’t believe this is real. 😢
